Breaking News! Sony PSP2 Announced!

Specific Release Date TBA (Holiday Season 2011)
Yesterday (January 26th) Sony held an event in Tokyo where they unveiled a few new products and services. One of the products announced was the much anticipated PSP2 (PlayStation Portable 2). 6 years after the original burst onto the scene, the PSP2 is really the start of a new generation of ultra portable, ultra powerful handheld devices.

Specifications:
  • A 5" 960x544 OLED Touchscreen Display
  • Dual Analog Sticks - Not Nubs as found on previous generations
  • 3G Connectivity
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • GPS
  • A Rear-Mounted Multi-Touch Touchpad
  • The Same Accelerometer & Gyroscope found inside PlayStation Move
  • An Electronic Compass
  • Front & Rear Facing Cameras - Unknown resolution
  • Sony say the CPU is the "Most Advanced in it's Class" -See Update for more details

  • Built in Microphone
  • New Game Media - SD Card Like media, no UMD 
The PSP2's UI is called LiveArea (Bye,bye XCMB), which has a bunch of vertically navigable home screens and built-in social networking (presumably through the PlayStation Network - PSN). You can easily jump between games and the LiveArea without losing your progress and comment on your buddies' great feats of mobile gaming. It is nice to see that mobile gaming is now taking the leap to integrating social networking.

Update: PSP2 (NGP) Has more power than the average mid range Laptop!

It has now been announced that the CPU powering the PSP2 (NGP) is an ARM Cortex A9 Quad Core CPU! This is incredible with the device now being able to compete with computers and household gaming consoles. But it gets even better, the device also has a Quad Core PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU! What a powerful device!
